Iron Man The key to Iron Man is the superb casting. Robert Downey Jr. is believable as both genius and drunken nihilist who undergoes a trial of physical and moral pain when he experiences what his genius has wrought. “Comic book movie” does not seem to apply here, since the anguish the viewer is shown is neither ridiculous nor melodramatic. In addition, while the science-fiction elements may seem fantastic, they do not feel so distanced from reality that they cannot be believed. Add to this a perfect control of tone – the screenplay seems to know exactly when to throw in bits of humor- and you have one of the best movies of the year.
