The Unborn

Casey Beldon hated her mother for abandoning her as a child. But when inexplicable events begin to happen, Casey begins to understand why she left. Plagued by merciless dreams and a tortured ghost that haunts her waking hours, she must turn to the only person, Rabbi Sendak, who can make it stop. With the help of Sendak, her best friend Romy and boyfriend Mark, Casey uncovers the source of a family curse dating back to Nazi Germany–a creature with the ability to inhabit anyone or anything that is getting stronger with each possession. With the curse unleashed, her only chance at survival is to shut a doorway from beyond our world that has been pried open by someone who was never born.

As we all know this movie has got a mixed response and it’s the same with me. I’ve mixed feelings for this movie. “The Unborn” may not be particularly original, nor is it a masterpiece in horror by any means, but it makes for a decent popcorn flick packed with plenty of boo-scares. It starts with a very frightening sequence. It’s a little weird that most of the more frightening sequences are near the beginning. The Unborn excels at disturbing images, and I wish that it would have relied more on those types of scares than the silly jump moments and loud noises that are the rule in most modern horror movies.
There is a bit of a mystery for the heroine to unravel in the movie, but this brings about another unfortunate similarity to The Eye. Once she really gets into the particulars of the plot, things start to seem a little silly. That’s my main quibble with The Unborn. It tries hard to provide a background and explanation for the events that happen, but it only serves to make it harder to take the movie seriously. The secret here is to just switch off and allow yourself to be entertained.
The story is decidedly sub-par and cliche-ridden, but the film is visually pleasing (particularly concerning the “creature” designs), fast-paced, and, most importantly, a lot of fun. As compared to most of the recent horror flicks, which were actually more horrible than horror to me, THE UNBORN is much better and a decent entertainer. Go for it without being pre-occupied with a lot of expectations and you’ll surely enjoy it.
